All the Details You Need to Know

The Story Behind This Plant

The Calamondin Orange, also known as Citrofortunella microcarpa, is an ancient hybrid cross between a mandarin orange and a kumquat. Originating in Southeast Asia, it has been cherished for centuries as both a symbol of good fortune and an indispensable culinary ingredient. Because it inherits the compact growth and cold-tolerance of the kumquat alongside the juicy traits of the mandarin, it has earned a global reputation as the absolute best citrus variety for indoor container gardening.

How to Keep Your Calamondin Happy

The secret to a thriving Calamondin is maximum sunlight and proper moisture balance. Follow these tips to help it flourish:

Light: Prefers direct sunlight. Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of bright sun daily. A south-facing window is ideal, or supplement with a quality LED grow light during darker months.
Water: Water thoroughly when the top few inches of soil dry out. Ensure water drains freely through the bottom holes; never let the roots sit in stagnant water.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity. Place a humidity tray nearby or run a humidifier nearby to combat dry indoor winter air.
Soil: Use a highly porous, well-draining potting soil formulated specifically for citrus or amended with extra perlite and orchid bark.
Temperature: Prefers a warm environment between 18°C and 27°C. Keep it clear of drafty windows, exterior doors, and direct heating vents.

Common Questions & Expert Tips

Helping you find the best care answers quickly.

Why is my Calamondin Orange tree dropping leaves?

Sudden leaf drop is typically a reaction to a drastic environmental shift, such as a sharp drop in temperature, light levels, or moving the plant into a dry room. It can also point to root stress from soil that is remaining damp for too long. Check that the drainage holes are clear and keep lighting steady.

Do I need to hand-pollinate the blossoms indoors?

While Calamondins are self-fertile, indoor spaces lack natural wind and insects to move pollen around. To increase your fruit set, gently swirl the center of open flowers with a soft paintbrush or cotton swab to distribute the yellow pollen between blossoms.

Is the Calamondin Orange plant toxic to pets?

Yes, citrus plants contain essential oils and psoralens that are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or swallowed. Keep your citrus tree positioned in an elevated spot or area where curious pets cannot access the foliage or fallen fruit.

"How big will my Calamondin Orange grow indoors?"

When grown in pots inside the home, a Calamondin Orange tree can easily be maintained at a manageable height of 3 to 5 feet through occasional seasonal pruning. It responds beautifully to shaping, allowing it to remain a gorgeous focal piece indefinitely.
