All the Details You Need to Know

The Story Behind This Plant

Native to the tropical islands of Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Pacific, Croton plants grow naturally as woody outdoor shrubs in warm, humid climates. The Petra is one of the most popular cultivated varieties because of its broad leaves and incredible color range. In its natural environment, it receives intense tropical sunlight, which is why it responds so well to bright light indoors. Give it a sunny spot, and it will reward you with constant color.

How to Keep Your Croton Petra Happy

The secret to keeping a Croton Petra happy comes down to plenty of light and consistent soil moisture. Here are straightforward care rules to follow:

Light: Position it in a spot that gets plenty of bright light, including a few hours of direct morning or afternoon sun. Low light will cause the leaves to turn solid green or drop off.
Water: Keep the soil evenly damp, but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Never let the pot sit in stagnant water.
Humidity: It loves extra humidity. Keep it around 50% or higher using a humidifier, especially when heaters are running during Canadian winters.
Soil: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix that holds moisture well without becoming soggy.
Temperature: Keep it warm! It hates cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C. Keep it away from cold entryways and drafty windows in winter.

Common Questions & Expert Tips

Helping you find quick care answers for your plant.

Why is my Croton Petra dropping its leaves?

Crotons are sensitive to sudden environmental changes. If you just moved your plant, brought it home, or placed it near a cold draft, it might drop leaves out of stress. Give it a steady warm spot with bright light, keep the soil damp, and it will bounce back with fresh growth.

Why are the leaves on my Croton Petra turning mostly green?

If the bright reds, oranges, and yellows start fading into dark green, your plant needs more sunlight. Move it closer to a bright window where it can soak up plenty of indirect sun or soft direct sunlight.

Is Croton Petra toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes, Croton plants contain a milky sap that is toxic to pets if chewed or ingested. It is best placed on a plant stand, counter, or high table away from curious pets.

"How big does a Croton Petra grow indoors?"
